About
Rasa Juškevičienė
born in 1972
Rasa Juškevičienė believes that there’s no point in repeating what’s already been done. She describes her design sense in one simple word: “DIFFERENT.”
However, “different” does not begin to cover it. Rasa combines seemingly incompatible materials, shapes and colors to create designs that are playful, whimsical yet profoundly complex. She compares her work process to walking on razor’s edge—one slight slip and the object can turn flashy and tasteless. Keeping the delicate balance produces the result that is harmonious, balanced, and refined.
Rasa Juškevičienė graduated from Vilnius Academy of Arts with a degree in textile in 1995. Early on, she demonstrated her original approach by creating unconventional textiles for interior design. A curtain, made for a store window in the historic downtown of Vilnius and featuring 1,000 feathers, encased in laminated ID cards, became her artistic manifesto. Later, she transitioned from working with the large scale textile to its mini counterpart—jewelry and accessories.
At the first glance, Rasa’s pieces may look somewhat naïve. But a closer look reveals fragility, sensitivity and beauty. Keep looking and you’ll start feeling a quiet flutter of butterfly wings in your chest: the feelings of goodness, innocence, and child-like wonder which Rasa invites us to experience. “Let us be ourselves, let us discover ourselves!” the artist says. Keep looking and you will start seeing DIFFERENTLY.
